Illustration Brief: “Sadness/Happiness” Exhibition
Objective
Create a compelling graphic work inspired by Titian’s Sisyphus for the exhibition “Sadness/Happiness.” The illustration will explore the dualities of despair and joy, reinterpreting Sisyphus’s myth to suggest that acceptance of one’s fate can lead to finding meaning or even joy in the repetitive cycles of effort and undoing.
Context
Titian’s Sisyphus vividly captures the torment and perseverance of its mythological subject. While Sisyphus is traditionally associated with endless struggle and futility, this piece will reinterpret his story through an existential lens, as proposed by Albert Camus: that once Sisyphus accepts his eternal task, he transcends his suffering and finds joy in the very act of pushing the boulder—a metaphor for embracing the cycles of effort, failure, and renewal inherent in life.
